Heater Not Working

Asked by Oct 14, 2013 at 04:13 PM about the 1997 Nissan Maxima GLE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The heater does not work it just blows air, but when I go 55+ mph it starts to blow hot. Coolant levels are fine and it looks like
coolant should. Car does over heat at a stand still so I know the thermostat needs to be replaced and will be replaced soon. Any
thoughts on what is going on are welcome.

Sounds like your cooling system is restricted. Either by deposits or some kind of stop leak "goop". When travelling at higher speeds the water pump is spinning faster and pumping harder. So coolant is forced through the restriction and you get heat. Flush out the system using a good quality chemical cleaner. I've used Prestone Super Flush in the past with good results. BUT be prepared for something to spring a leak. Given the age of your vehicle you might uncover a pin hole in the radiator, heater core, or have a weakened hose split. HTH. -Jim

Try a thermostat and gasket, flush all old coolant out of the system and try not to use any sealer.
