Whining Noise all of the time

Asked by Tanner Mar 19, 2019 at 02:38 PM about the 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander LS AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There's a whining noise coming from my car whether it's in gear or not. It
increases in frequency and amplitude as the RPM's increase. I've replaced
the alternator with no change. It sounds like it's coming from a pulley on the
belt but I don't want to rip into anything else without some clues as to what it
might be. I'll be posting a video soon. Any help is appreciated.

Listen carefully to find the source. An idler wheel bearing is a possibility.

Check the fluid level in your power steering. Also, turn off your A/C and defrost to see if it might be the A/C compressor. Some cars, it's normal to hear the alternator whine, especially under heavier current loads.

I'll listen more closely for sure. The sound didn't start until a few weeks ago and it's pretty loud so. I have a hard time believing it's the power steering fluid because I don't have any problems turning, but I'll definitely check it. It's just hard to pick out what it is for sure. Here's the link to the video. https://youtu.be/-Tp1oJpNF8E

Try the screwdriver stethascope method, handle in ear bit end on pulley nut or mount. Please watched for fans and belt, be careful and use a long one. You'll know...

Question - did the idler pulley affect the drivability of car and rpms (when accelator was pressed down)?
