Why does my 1993 mercury capri engine shut off when automatic transmission is put in any gear?

My 1993 mercury capri starts & idles perfectly. I can also "rev" engine to high RPMs with no problem when transmission is in "N" or "P". However, when transmission is put in any gear the engine shuts off. Any suggestions or solutions for my problem?
