2000 mercury village won't turn over

I had to replace the
belt for the alternator
and forgot to
disconnect the
battery and
accidentally arked the
alternator ive done
this many times being
in a hurry on other
vehicles and nothing
went wrong. But this
time. Once we got
everything together
and tried to start it
nothing happened we
have power to the
head lights but
nothing going into the
vehicle what could be
causing this.
