abs brakes

My 2000 mountaneer with 45000 miles on it has started going into "abs" mode when stopping. This is on dry pavement and always when the speed has slowed to about 2 or 3 mph. I hear clicks, a hiss and then the brakes fade. I have to increase pressure on the brake pedal. it is intermittant but frequent. New pads and rotors less than 5000 miles ago.  abs light does not come on.

Sounds like you might have problem with your brake booster. Sometimes the diaphragm might tear causing a vacuum leak thus causing breaks to fade. The hissing sound also confirms that its the problem. When you press the brake pedal the air escapes the diaphragm from a tear, Thus causing the hissing sounds. Thanks Rob

the clicks you here are the safety cleats that let you know your brake pads have to be replaced.
