Mystery: Trunk Vent leak 2014 Avalon Hybrid

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a leak in the TRUNK that I have narrowed down to the driver's side
vent over the wheel well. With the Trunk lid closed, I poured water over the
rear window and I can see water coming out of the vent. The Mystery is in
that I do not understand what the entry point is for the water, and how the
water can make it's way from the rear window seals (or trunk seals) into that
vent. It just seems like such an unlikely water flow path. If anyone can advise
on where the most likely water entry point is and how the heck the water
makes it's way into the vent, PLEASE PLEASE comment.

Any updates? I just found this EXACT situation on my 2014 Limited. How is the water getting their all of a sudden and how do we stop it?!

I had the same problem and noticed that the edges of the plastic vent were not sealed properly. The water was getting in between the metal trunk liner and the edge of the plastic vent. I used some roof sealant and that worked for about a year... Today I noticed that there is water in the trunk again. If anyone has found a long-term solution, please let us know.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? My 2014 Avalon Limited has this problem and the smell from water soaked Styrofoam is unbearable.

I also just noticed this in my 2013 XLE Touring Hybrid that I just got. We had some heavy rain the past couple of days, but I went to take some stuff out of the trunk and there was definitely water that had entered on the left side of the trunk. I'm also curious about a resolution.

There are several leaks on my 2013 (mines had a rear end accident) so I’ll go over all leaks. Starting with the biggest issue was from the accident, was repaired and the back window wasn’t removed during that process so water started seeping in through cracks in the structure! The next is still an issue which is the trunk vent, taillight gasket, taillight clips and maybe some from the sunroof drain. Those leaks are all minor except for the trunk vent leak. Even after putting caulk to seal the vent edges - if it rains hard enough the flap from the vent will open and let water in anyways. I’d see if there’s a revised part for the newer Avalon’s to combat this issue and if not I’d limit how much the flap on the vents can open by simply putting something to deter it from opening too much (gonna have to unclip part of your bumper for this).
