How do I get my 2003 Mazda Protege LX to pick up speed faster?

My Mazda takes a while to pick up speed and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help it speed up quicker?

Is the check engine light on? If not, check the fittings and clamps on the air intake tubing that connects the air filter to the Throttle Body. If I'm barking up the wrong tree and you just want the car to go faster than normal, my apologies.
