Outback Head Gasket Replacement Cost

Asked by Dan Dec 02, 2023 at 02:47 PM about the 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

How much should it cost to replace the head gasket on a 2018 Subaru Outback
in the Boston area.  I received a ridiculous estimate of between $7K and $8K to
replace.

You can always do it yourself . Not to be a punk but look into any recalls there's a chance in hell it was a problem . You're lucky if you can get your car looked at within the week right ?

Consumer affairs show around 5500 bucks worse case. Sounds like you’re getting jacked around.

Labor costs, like everything else, have been soaring. It's not uncommon for a shop to be charging $200 or more, per hour, for labor. Ask what their hourly rate is and find out how many hours this job should take. It's a major repair so I wouldn't be surprised if the labor estimate is around 12 hours or more. A Google search will help you determine that. I'd also shop around. Cheapest isn't always better but neither is most expensive. Go with a middle of the road estimate. Hope that helps! Jim

You can find a used MINI clubman (classic) for ~$11k! Why would you even try to replace your gasket in the Boston area ;/
