Asked by GuruVB3NF Aug 18, 2018 at 09:26 PM about the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: General

Purchased new 2018 grand Cherokee on 5-24-18.  Had towing hitch installed
at dealership but they discovered no wiring at rear bumper for towing.
Dealership said Chrysler is working with vendor to develop towing harness.
Chrysler told dealership the grand Cherokee and Durango both have this
issue.  still waiting for solution 3 months later

Also waiting, purchased new 7/12/18 and was suppose to be installed within 30 days... Still waiting.

It is now 10/23/18. My dealer says there is no word yet. You would think someone could provide an update or time line estimate, but I haven't been able to find any.

Thank you for your reply. I wrote two letters to the CEO of Chrysler. They have called me twice in the last two weeks. Vendor is working on the issue. Chrysler promised to follow up until fixed.

They have been "working with a vendor" for over half a year. How long does it take to figure out how to connect a couple of wires? After market wiring kits to solve this problem are already available from outfits like etrailer. Hopefully the Jeep/Chrysler solution will be available without too much further delay.

It looks like the wire harness is now available from MOPAR. Have made an appointment through my local dealer to order and install.

Thanks! Keep us updated on the install if you don't mind. Parts counter guy said it's a rather lengthy install, and just confirmed with the instructions I found online. Debating on self-install or paying the labor for the dealership to do it.

For me, the hitch and wire harness was part of the negotiated purchase price when I bought the vehicle. So, I do not have to install myself. The dealer put the hitch on my Grand Cherokee the day after I bought it and then informed me of a delay with the availability of the wire harness. I hope to finally have everything resolved within a couple of weeks. Harness is ordered and appointment for install made.

Got the call that the parts were in after about 5 months of waiting. It's a complete wiring harness front to back so they had to removed seats and other parts of the interior. Took 3 days to complete.

I waited over 5 months, but got into the dealership today. 7 hours later, everything was installed. I believe I was their first install with the new wire harness. Glad it was part of my purchase price and I did not have to pay hourly labor.

Walmart has the adapter. I just grabbed it yesterday. But now you have to go to the dealer to get the upgrade for 150 bucks on the computer system.

Just be careful, although you may put a hitch and wire harness on, without the tranny cooler that comes with a factory tow group you could do some damage. My v6 capacity is 5500lbs.

FYI, figured I would post this for folks that are looking around for information about Grand Cherokee's that don't have the factory tow hitch and wiring installed. I found this on Google during my lengthy research before I installed it on my own Jeep. But I did a writeup because I literally couldn't find anything that had the info I needed. I hope this helps folks who are looking to add a hitch to their Grand Cherokee - https://www.caraudionow.com/tow-hitch-install-2018-grand-cherokee/
