Why do I have to use a screwdriver on the release button every time to get out of park

Your Transmission shift solenoid switch is worn and needs replacing.

I had a similar problem where the release button would not depress to get out of park. I took the handle off and discovered that a little plastic tab had broken off inside the handle and was binding up the button. After removing the unneeded tab it works as good as new.
