Where is the coolant coming from, the front of the motor, or towards the back. Have you noticed a sweet smell out the exhaust and a lot of white smoke? Have you checked for spark?

A backfire like that is usually timing related. Check for spark and fuel. If you have both do a compression test. If all cylinders test very low or zero it's jumped timing. HTH. -Jim
