my husband ford explorer 2000 4x4 button won't change from low to anything

Are you saying the Explorer won't go into four wheel drive high or low? Maybe the actuator on the transfer case is bad.

well we fixed that part now the truck won't reverse

The transmission and transfer case are two separate issues.
