Why is my oil light on

Driving car fine.  Parked to get groceries, got back in, no start.  All lights
working.  Battery fine.  Pushed home.  Next morning started but barely and was
sputtering.  Next day it started.  Checked oil.  down a quart and seems to be
gritty.  Engine light still on but car starts and runs

Did you add a quart? Grit is bad. I suggest an immediate oil and filter change. If the oil light stays on you probably have low oil pressure from a worn engine.

thanks. car runs and stays running but ticking now. dont want to leave running long. gonna change oil and see what it lookes like. the ticking sounds internal. Do you think this is most likely engine damage or is it possible for something this to be fixed with simple oil and filter.
