The battery cables were removed and replaced. Now the evac needs needs to reset by driving. How is that accomplished

No lights are on. When he plugs in the hand help computer and he kept reading it wrong. It is evap. The registration has been paid but this evap is the culprit. It can’t pass smog which it always does. He was told to drive it until it turns to green.
