Outback ECM

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My new 2016 outback has continual dead battery.
Jump, tow and Subaru replaces their battery (5
times)  Filing lemon law and their last fix
opportunity - engineer advises to reprogram the
ECM .  They said there is a recall on outbacks now.
Very worried since Im almost out of lemon law
range...and that this fix will open to new issues

I hope you have complained directly to Subaru of America. Be firm and do not take no for answer.

So mine died this week and they had to replace the battery in my 2017 Outback and had to update the the ECM to improve the charging logic. My battery died despite putting 120 highway miles on the car right before and no dash light showed a charging issue. The scary thing is that the back gate locked so if you needed a jack, tire, etc out of it, it would not open. Only if you use a screwdriver (mine was in the back tire storage) could you manually open it. My first warning on this was the beeping of the tailgate signaling that the gate was open. So each time I came to a stop it started to beep when I started up and quit 45 or so seconds once I was moving. I would come back on with each stop all during the trip and the gate would not open. So if you get this signal, go to your nearest Subaru dealer as it is not the rear gate but the battery. I did not and had to be towed. There should be a recall but as far as I know there is not. Hope this helps someone.

Hi Dwight - did the ECM update fix your issue? We just had our battery replaced again (it was 7 months old!) - the dealer gave us the ECM update. I'm nervous since we're driving cross country on a 2 day road trip soon - I'm hoping the ECM update does the trick.
