I have a 1988  firebird V6....any ways to modify for more horsepower without the obvious
motor swap out?

Forget it, swap out for a faster car, try looking at a Subaru WRX STI.

Yes, add tube headers, aftermarket cam & kit, modifiying the cylinder heads, use the valve springs in the kit, port & polish, mill a few thousands off the heads. A local cylinder head shop is your best bet. (I've seen Chevy V6's that make almost as much hp as V8's) Buy & install a MSD ignition box.
