How do I clean out the gas tank on my 96 Geo Prizm?

Asked by Taylorjean2810 Sep 22, 2015 at 04:57 PM about the 1996 Geo Prizm 4 Dr STD Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car has been sitting for 5 years. With
gas left in the car. So I am wanting to see if
there's any way to really clean out the whole
gas tank& any sort of fuel lines? Any
suggestions on anything to help get it back
in shape would be appreciated.

drop the tank , pull the pump, disconnect the fuel line @ the fuel rail clean everything best you can ( carb cleaner and shop air helps, the big thing to worry about are the injectors . i would remove all and carefully fill the rail with carb cleaner apply light shop air and activate each injector it should spray clean not drippy sputter. good luck

Drop the tank- a radiator shop is usually the place to get it cleaned- don't try to start it- if you do all the stuff gets pulled into the fuel system-

yes sir a radiator shop would be a good idea how ever the car only sat for five years although the gas that is in the hole system from tank to the injectors is bad , you will most likley not have much rust so a steam cleaning is not needed. weather or not you try to start the car , does not matter it is fuel injected and the fuel at the injectors is already there and should be cleaned. because the pump may have been submirged in that fuel it may need to be replaced
