2003 ford ranger engine swap.

I have a base model 2003 ford ranger 2wd 5 speed. Its just
the 4 banger. Needs new tranny so I want to through a
larger engine into it. What is the biggest ford engine I can
just bolt directly into my ranger? Id prefer to stay with a 5
speed. I just wantbmore power and be able to just drop
transmission and engine in. I don't want to do tons of fab
work. No time. Thank you.

Ford used a 3.0 V6 and a 4.0 V6 in your truck. Neither one will just "bolt up" since you need the exhaust system, ECU, wiring etc, etc to make the other engines work. I would not use the OHC 4.0 because they have too many timing chain problems.
