Cost to own (battery replacement)

Asked by Sashim Dec 13, 2018 at 06:19 PM about the 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid EX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm looking at a used hybrid vs gas Optima so the warranty will expire. I read that the battery will need to be replaced at some point and costs thousands to replace. Is this true and if so how much should I budget for? Seems like it cancels out the gas savings. Thanks!

Kudos on doing the math before you buy. You can Google the battery cost but it is hard to say when your car will need a new battery. Keep doing your research!

Dealerships charge premium rates. You can go for a new battery for about $3000 not including labor. You can punt and get a tested used battery for $600 to 1000 before labor costs that should give a year or more of service. If you are an experienced DIY person and are careful, you can install the battery yourself, but the 270 volt system can be deadly without proper precautions.
