Firecracker sounds coming from under the hood

Asked by Michael Mar 28, 2021 at 08:37 AM about the 2007 Honda Odyssey EX-L FWD with DVD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Drained battery overnight, jumped to start and let it run. started making what
sounded like fireworks under the hood after about 15 minutes. I let it cool down
and later drove to my mechanic, it was a short drive and van ran fine,  He found
that by removing the A/C fuse it would not make the noise. The A/C compressor
and condenser are new. What is causing the fireworks noise?

Sounds are impossible to diagnose over the internet. All you can do is have a mechanic listen to them.

Was the ac turned on when the noise is happening or does it happen even with the ac turned off.

Check your A/C relay, it operates your A/C clutch, and when they are old they get weak, and will keep your A/C clutch engaged. This will lead to your A/C system to over-pressurize and your safety vlv will lift making a load noise. This will also kill your battery overnight. The relay cost about $7.00, and it just plugs in.
