2012 silverado dash says engine hot a/c turned off, temp gauge doesn"t work. what could this be?

Sounds like either a bad coolant temperature sensor. Or the temperature sensor is unplugged. When this happens the computer assumes that the engine is overheating, just to be on the safe side. HTH. -Jim
