loud rattle under hood and no ecceleration

Asked by Kenneth Sep 30, 2018 at 11:07 PM about the 2005 Dodge Magnum SXT RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving my 05 Dodge magnum and all of a it sounded like it lost air
compression somewhere and the car slowed down and began to rattle really
bad.  I could pick up speed at the start of a drive but after I hit the brakes it will
not longer accelerate. it doesn't sound like the rods or lifters it sort of sound like
the oil pump tensioner.  but I thought I may need to change the motor.
someone please help save me a dollar.

If you have a death rattle and no acceleration probably a good idea to stop driving it, unless you want to scrap the motor. I don't know what anyone here can tell you, other than to look at the motor.

BTW not trying to be unhelpful above, but with that sort of loud hard rattle you need to tear into the motor, maybe at least pop the valve cover and see if a rocker didn't come loose, being a Dodge they aren't bolted into place. A gunked up lifter can let slack into the rocker assembly and they rocker arms, especially the 4.7s.

"...and they throw rocker arms, especially the 4.7s." sorry for typo above, we can't edit posts on this site.
