External temp reading -40 degrees

Asked by Vielle562 Jul 04, 2017 at 07:15 PM about the 2006 Dodge Charger R/T RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Well, we bought a blown up 2006 Dodge Charger,
police package. Replaced the motor. Ran great until
my external temp reading said -40. Some days it
was -40, sometimes -22 then up to 73. I live in
Vancouver,Wa. not the artic lol. Runs super rich
now. We replaced the ambient temp sensor twice
and it makes no difference. Washer fluid light and
brake light on now. All fluids full. The code reader
says ats. We are at a loss. We tried replacing the
computer and the bcm(fcm) different companies
call it different things. What the heck else could this
be? Any input would be rad. Thanks.

You need to replace the Ambient Temperature sensor. Its usually mounted behind the front grill or bumper, looks like a black square with a nose on it. Not surprised, police cars go through a lot of rough-housing. Start by replacing the sensors that are giving you issues, then work your way back. Worst comes to worst, you may have a serious electrical issue that can be shorted virtually anywhere from the ECM to your grounds...unless you feel like tearing apart the car, cut your losses and sell or just drive as-is
