Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Needed a jump 2 times in the last 2 months.
Bought a new battery and now I'm noticing the gage is
riding lower. I don't want to get stranded again. The 1st
time it happened I left the car running for 3 hours and drove
it for 45 minutes of the drive. When the car was parked and
running it stayed on 13 volts for about 40 mins then finally
went back to 14 volts. Started driving the car again and it
went back to 13 volts. got the car home drove it 2 hours
later and it started volts on 14.2  for a 20 min drive.
Today the car was started and driven 30 min normal day
traffic stop and go volts stayed on 14 for about 20mins of
drive then dropped  to 13. I turned on AC after that turn
radio on to see if it would drop lower never did.
Could there be something going on? I dont want to get
stranded again.

It depends on the battery brand, if you had a good brand battery before like Autozone Duralast and it stayed above 14 all the time but now you have a new battery like a Walmart one the volts drops because of the quality and power it gives.

Sounds normal to me. The charging voltage will vary as the battery load goes up or down and will tend to vary between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. The static voltage should be a little higher than 12.6 when the engine is not running.

Hello all, Thanks for responding. The battery came from Advance auto, brand Auto Craft size H6 730 CCA $169.00. Im still monitoring voltage. Every since my last post the voltage is holding on 14v sometimes slightly above, or slightly below. The battery has not went back down to the 13 since deciding to ask the question. I've also been running everything in the car.

I’m having the same problem. Replaced the battery with a Napa brand Replaced the alternator because it would drop down to 9 after after 10 min. Now voltage goes to 14 sometimes then drops to 13. I put a volt meter on battery and it reads 12.2. Start car and says 13 volts. Put a trickle charger on it at night and got to 12.4 volts ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATE THANKS

Something's draining my battery fast. I replaced the battery and it's way down in two days. Had the alternator checked and it's fine. How do I find the problem.
