Do you bring the reading you want zeroed out up on the screen? If you want to zero out say, the #2 trip meter, bring it up on the screen then push the cancel button and hold it counting slowly to 9 or eleven. That should do it. That is what it is designed to do. Is the car running and in park? Perhaps your car needs to be running before it can be changed. I never tried to do mine when the car is off and just the accessory switch is on. I always set my mileage when I refill up, and I do it with the engine running.
