gas guage is just up and down

It is a very common problem. The fuel sending unit is goobered up and therefore is not giving you a clear reading. GM sells a fuel additive that you put into the tank that will fix the problem about 75% of the time. There are also a few generic ones you can get at, say a Wal-Mart, that will do the same thing but I am unsure which ones work the best

It is common for the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank read the fuel level incorrectly. The sensor must be replaced to correct the condition. I recommend having the complete fuel pump module replaced on high mileage vehicles since the unit has to be removed in-order to replace the sensor so replace the entire unit to avoid undue service & labour cost in the future..
