BMW 1990 535i - How can I reduce the looseness or play in the steering wheel?

Asked by Aug 03, 2014 at 03:49 PM about the 1990 BMW 5 Series 535i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Over time steering wheel has lost sportiness feel.  There seems to be excessive play in
steering wheel. Car has 189,000 miles.

Have all steering components inspected for worn or damaged parts. Then if all those are in good condition but steering still has to much play you can adjust steering gear box on most model cars. The gear box will have a threaded stud sticking out of it with a jam nut on it holding it in place. Loosen jam nut and in real small increments turn the stud. Check steering. Do this till it looses all the play. Use caution not to do it to much. You will cause the gears to get in a bind and fail. When done tighten the jam nut back up.
