The oil indicator light comes on intermitantly. Just had an oil and filter change. No oil leaks visible and the oil level is fine. How can I tell if the oil pump is going or if it is the sensor?

There are two stages to the light you are talking about. One is yellow which means oil level is low. And the other one is red meaning oil pressure issue. What I normally see with this is if you have a yellow light that comes on then goes out its an issue with your oil level sensor and needs to be replaced. If its red then you need pressure sensor or engine. Hope this helps.

Robert is correct the yellow low oil level warning indication and the red oil pressure light are in the same location but recieve there warning signals from different areas. The low level warning sensor is a very common failure on that vehicle. One of the reasons is the ridiculously long oil change interval recommendation. If it is the yellow warning and the oil level is full, replace the sensor in the bottom of the oil pan and change the oil. If you intend to keep the car change the oil every 6 months or 6k miles. It will greatly reduce your cost of ownership in the long run.

I replace my engine oil and filter every 3k. I had the same problem with the sensor at about 180k miles. Changing the sensor worked.

What about if Red oil sensor comes on? I see above Robert says, "If its red then you need pressure sensor or engine." Does he mean a pressure sensor or NEW engine?

Folks, thank you for your input. I'm here because I'm looking for answers to the same ??? 02 325xi, 152k, and intermittent yellow EO light with topped up oil level. To share specifics, my light comes on when I've been driving at speed for a minute or two, then nearly always turns off when the RPMs drop under 1500 (e.g., get off the freeway and stop at a light). Note that I went live with my OBD2 scanner when the EO light came on and no DTCs are posted due to this event. Thanks again!

To Memzi95 - I bought an OEM Hella oil level sensor off eBay for 44.50 and did it myself at the next oil change (which I also do myself).
