Issues resolving P0340 Cam Shaft Position Sensor Code

Asked by Tom Mar 29, 2017 at 11:46 AM about the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I drive a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.6 V 6. My CEL came on
about 3 months ago with the code P0340 "Cam Shaft Position Sensor." I
replaced the right Cam Shaft Position Sensor and the light went off. Recently
my CEL came back on stating the same issue. I then changed out the left
Cam Shaft Position Sensor. The light now remains on. I brought it to a
dealership and they think that it may be the Cam Phasers and gave me a
estimate of seismic proportions. My car seems to be running fine. I am
having trouble with the idea spending a bunch of money for an "it may be".
What exactly do Cam Phasers do? Is it safe to drive with faulty Cam
Phasers? Has anyone had similar symptoms and found that it was
something else?

What I find on this is cleaning the electrical connection plugins for the crankshaft sensor and for the camshaft sensors. Its seems the electrical connections are the biggest problem. Also if this fails then replacing the crankshaft sensor has resolved this problem. Make sure and get the code cleared after a fix.
