ALLISON TRANSMISSION VS CVT? Is there a difference?

These transmissions seem similar, but, I really don't know. Both have paddle shifters
and the ability for engine braking. My Subaru Outback Limited has their Lineartronic
CVT transmission. Both gearboxes have step less shifts. Please advise.

Im not 1000% sure of your question, but I can say this. I have allot of experiences with both and I find that the CVT is just not good technology. I see them failing allot, and I see no one offering a way to rebuild them, so the cost to replace is extremely high. The Allison transmission on the other hand is a very sound and reliable transmission capable of lasting 100's of thousands miles.
Jeff, I see, tell me which CVT transmissions you have heard that failed . Subaru??? Or some other make? You know, they're not all the same build. As far as technology, an engineer told me that these are superior to conventional automatic transmissions with planetary gears.
