Road noise

Asked by Larry Oct 15, 2018 at 02:10 PM about the 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a used 2010 subaru outback. It has quite a bit of road noise in
the rear. I replaced all 4 tires with new michelins. It still has the same rear road
noise. Is this normal for a subaru outback or could it be a wheel bearing or gear
related problem??

It may still be the tires if the Michelins are as noisy as the ones you replaced. Many times an aggressive Winter tire will be noisier than an all season tire. Another possibility is the rear differential needs oil. And lastly, I hope it isn't a wheel bearing. Naturally, they wear out on a higher mileage vehicle. Sometimes you can feel a lot of play in the wheel while it's lifted by a floor jack, if it's worn out.

Probably normal for your car. Subaru's not exactly luxury cars. You can add sound proofing if this is something that really bothers you.

How many miles are on your car??? I don't have any excessive noise...car is actually pretty quiet.... I don't know what FOR means by the comment "not exactly luxury cars"..... And, I certainly wouldn't do anything to "soundproof" my car.... completely unnecessary.

i am amazed at the answers I get . Lack of isolation is caused by low profile tyres which have to 35 psi and rubber pad under the coil springs which are too thin. A commodore pad is13mm thick subaru 8mm. My subaru you cant hear the radio for the noise.

I recently purchased Michelin AS Premier tires for my 2010 Subaru Outback Limited.... extremely quiet and smooth ride.... Costco deal, saved money and have the ability to get them adjusted anywhere in the USA at a nearby Costco.

Handling comes at a price. If you want a mushy ride buy an old Cadillac. Low profile tires and firm suspension have trade offs like anything else.
