Year mixup on Toyota

Asked by Sarah Jul 14, 2020 at 05:57 PM about the 2010 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

Recently traded in a Solara for a Camry after
becoming a momma and the years aren't the
same... VIN# says 2010 and the title says
2011 so I'm having a helluva time getting
registration. Call DMV or dealer?

Built in 2010 but sold as a 2011 model car? Did you do a VIN check?

Makes no difference if the years are not the same. I would think the DMV would be the deciding authority.

This has been done for many years since vehicles have always begun selling models for the upcoming year around Sept of the current year. As long as your VIN matches your title the DMV will not get involved but the dealer should fully explain why the information differs. If you are uncomfortable with this move on to a different vehicle or dealer.

The tenth character of the VIN is the model year of the vehicle. See the chart below. Hope that helps! Jim

If there's an error on the title and you bought the vehicle from a Dealer, the Dealer needs to handle it with your local DMV. Does the VIN on the vehicle match the VIN on the title exactly? If not, you have another problem. But again, the Dealer is the one who has to fix it! Hope that helps!! Jim

The VIN numbers are the same on both but it was sold as a 2010 with the manufacturer date being 4/10. It's a screw up by someone and dealer says they'll fix it. The clerk's office is closed here anyways. State Farm says the vin# matches the year it was sold as.‍♀️

Ok, glad the Dealer is going to fix it for you! Thanks for letting us know! Jim
