Transmission flush

Asked by GuruTC9V9 Jun 26, 2018 at 11:52 AM about the 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently got my sisters car a 2009 Outback wagon and she has always
used the dealer for service, but I fond them so much more expensive.
Should I stick with a dealer service center to do a transmission flush or can
any mechanic at other places to the work just as well?
Thank you,
Rose

It's really NOT a good idea to back-flush a Subaru trans, as there's simply too great a risk of sending dirt up into the valve body. Better to just DRAIN and REFILL with 3.75 qts fresh ATF every couple of years. Just because service shops have invested in a profitable automated back-flusher doesn't mean it's technically a wise procedure. If dirt gets trapped in the valves there's no way to clean it!! If your trans fluid is VERY dirty just drain and refill TWICE about a week apart so that you've changed the majority of the old fluid. Then drain and refill annually if it manes you feel better.
