Why won't it shift into gear if it's dead

If it is "dead" just have a funeral and bury it or have it cremated.

If the battery is dead the shift safety interlock operated by a switch on the brake pedal will not let you shift out of park. Recharging the battery or applying jumper cables should let you shift out of park.
