Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car died on the highway. I was told my timing
belt/chain went out and now I have to replace the
whole engine. Is this true?

f you have an "interference" engine it could be true because the valves collide with the pistons ,, but in many cases the damage done can be minimal to no damage at all ,,, it depends on what position the cam was in when the belt broke. DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ,,,before you replace the belt in order to determine the extent (if any) of the damage. If there is damage it can vary from bent valves to a broken rod/crankshaft. In either case the head must be removed for repair. A complete engine replacement is usually not needed. To sum it up the damage can be anywhere from just replacing the belt to a complete tear down,,
