Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Having trouble with my oil pressure in my silverado 5.3.
I’ve change the oil pressure 2 years ago and 5 days ago. I
drive the truck and about 5-6 miles oil pressure drops to
zero. The oil levels are normal, I’ve noticed engine has
been using more coolant then normal, but I haven’t had to
add any coolant to the truck. It’s not running hot. I do see
it does create a lot of heat. I do hear a small winding noise
when the truck is in park, which I’ve been told is the oil
pump. I drove the truck to the dealership about 10 miles.
Dealership thinks the whole engine needs to be replaced
for $7500. They are not sure if just replacing the oil pump
will fix problem or not. They said there is some leakage
coming from the side of the engine, but I haven’t added
any oil to the truck since November, so it’s a small leak
eveidentially. They mentioned oil was dirty, but no signs of
metal. Any ideas??? I believe the techs at the dealership
haven’t had much experience as they’ve only worked
there 1-2 years. Any suggestions? I’m picking the truck up
and driving it home tomorrow.

The engine has 209,000 miles on it, but I have used mobile one synthetic 15,000 mile ole, but change the oil at 13,000 mile intervel. I was using the bosh filter, but recently changed to the Mobil one filter that can go the distance with the oil.

Oil** And thanks for the response! I’m gonna try that out tomorrow. With being so many miles on the truck.....would it have a impact? It’s been well taken care of.

Ok well that’s good news! Engine has been well taken care, it hurts when something goes wrong. I had 2001 tahoe which I never did much with....only added oil an never changed it. Not a single engine problem, other than replacing a alternator. 243,000 before I ended up selling it. I think what I wanna do is replace the seals and the oil pump. I’m thinking that should fix the oil pressure problem. If everything is sealed off, you would think it would be able to build pressure? An then yes if need be bearings, rods, etc....like I mentioned there no knocking or smoke. The truck drives smooth.

I don't know if the 08's had problems like earlier Silverado's. But the guage's could quit one by one and your car could seem to run ok but your dash gauges sends signals to your computer and dash cluster have been a problem. My 03 first the voltmeter went, and as I was looking up what could be the problem, and just like that oil pressure quit. I looked it up and there have been problems with them and you can't find a new one, but are easy to replace, but you have to send back the core. If your computer doesn't get the right info, who knows what it could do. Start at square one and then just check all relays and fuse's . Also the owner's manual has lots of data in it as well.

So far trucks still at the dealer. They begged me to leave the truck an let them do a more thorough investigation of what’s causing the oil pressure to be low. I’m giving them one more day to figure out

Update: there isn’t oil pressure at the top of the vehicle to reach bearings. There is 50 psi at the oil filter. They say it’s a clog somewhere, but it’s cheaper for me to rebuild the engine.....any ideas?

Yeah it comes with 3 year warranty or 100k miles. They say it’s something internal causing the restriction which can cost upwards $2k.
