How long should brakes last?
All depends on your braking habits, and type of pads used. That's why they are checked during your state inspection on the thickness. I've seems some people go through pad in under 20K miles and some get 80K miles out of a set of pads and rotors.
Tom is 100% correct. I have seen that many reports on Product Review about people only getting 20,000klms out of a set of pads and someone else getting 60,000klms out of the same pads on the same vehicles. The biggest killer of brake pads are fools who ride the brake pedal. Constant friction glazes the pads and the rotors, resulting in diminished braking, squealing and ultimately premature destruction of both. Autos will usually use them up quicker.
City stop and go driving will eat up brake pads faster than highway driving. I bought my '93 Chevy Caprice brand new and got 70,000 miles out of the original pads and shoes. HTH. -Jim
