07' hybrid 4whl drive with load "clunk" when it goes into reverse?
i could use some help... i have a 2007 ford escape hybrid 4whl drive with aprx.
35k miles on it... it has run perfectly until about a month ago... when i put it into
reverse there is a loud "clunk" noise coming from the rear of the car... i took it to
the ford dealer and they have had the car for about a month...when they
disconnected the drive shaft the noise went away.... so they replaced the drive
shaft... the noise was still there... then after a lot of dialog with ford hotline
assistance they replaced the rear end... (not the axles or cv joints) but the whole
rear end.... and the noise is still there... they have now said that there is nothing
more that they can do! and that i must wait until they have another escape hybrid
4 whl drive in the shop so that they can compare the cars and see if the noise is
present in the other car... but.. they have not been able to locate another car...
and the noise does not sound good... it is a loud clunk... and it just started about
a month ago... can anyone please help me with this?
p.s. after reading some of the dialogue between the dealer and ford they suspect
the PTU? and they also said that if they command the rear end anywhere from 0%
to 20% the noise goes away... but if above that the noise is back... and when they
command it to 100% then the noise in there both in reverse and in forward....

Ive had chassis ears all over the place. Cant source the noise. If I command the rear coupler from anywhere between 0 and 20% the thump noise goes away. If I go over that the noise returns at all percentages up to 100. At 100 the noise happens forward and reverse. sounds to me the problem may be in the tranny,tourk converter.
it might be? but it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car... and... when they disconnected the drive shaft the noise went away? here is some of the reports that went form the dealer and ford regarding the noise...
noise travles,I myself dont trust dealer mechanics,most have 1 that knowes what is going on,the rest are hire off the street.been their seen that,got tired of the 100 questions a day from others.they can print out anything on paper,not knowing the cause of the problem,I feel it is a tranny issue.
it sound to me like your rear dif is twisting when you put it into gear i loked at the repor tand it said binding i dont know if tou doo alot of towing you know when they put ladder bars on a dragstre it keeps the rear end from twisting down and hopping if the springs are bad bad bushings shocks thats what you need to look for
have you put a lift kit on it if you did you might want to get some degree shims to ofset theangles the original shims might have fallen out if you pitch the rear up shims are usaly 3 to 5 degrees you shouldent hear a clunk that dosent mean that the problem is fixed but the ujoiunts wontbind
hi ron.... i appreciate your time.... i wound up taking the car to a different dealer and they found that it was the PTU... they replaced it and all is good...
