How will the car behave if the transmission is going?

Slow going into gear, fluid dark color and smells burnt, high revs between shift points, feels like it goes into gear but won't move, blowing fluid out of the front or rear seals and up the dipstick when it get warmed up. Just a few of the symptoms I can think of right now.

One sure sign something is not up to snuff is when the daily driver thinks to himself/herself, "something is not right - doesn't feel like it's shifting right."
