Engine failsafe mode

What could this be? When engine failsafe mode
comes on with a little wrench light and 2005 Ford
explorer xlt acts like it's going to die.

Owners manual indicates the vehicle has entered "limp mode" if so equipped. It does that so you do not continue to drive and destroy the engine or transmission, a problem is detected. Get it to a shop.
