What do I do if my 66 mustang will start but not get into gear ?

I have a 66 mustang and I just got her up an running. I just cant drive it , i dont know if its
the emergency brake ? Still I try to put into firs t or neutral then I come upon the same
results of stand still.

Check for fluid in the transmission.

Automatic or manual tranny? When it`s "in gear" if you press the gas does the engine rev freely or does it bog down as if your foot is on the brake? Is the shifter linkage adjusted properly?
