My 2008 Ford Escape AWD floor matts keep getting soaked. I thought I had fixed it by making sure the sunroof was closed properly, but it has continued. I have tried to figure out where this is coming from and finally after drying them out again I laid under the the vehicle and both on the drivers side in the middle of the front floor area and the passanger side there is a small hole about the size of a dine right in the middle. That would account for the water coming in after rain storms and such, but why would these two holes be there? Was there a drain area there with plugs and they are missing? Can I have a piece of metal welded over them? Don't know why they would be there. Doesn't seem to be a rust issue as it is frim all around these small holes.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Water leak on floors from underneath.  There is a small hole size of a dime on both drivers side and passanger side underneath floor matts right in the middle of each.  Can I have this repaired with a small plate welded underneath.  Why were they there in the first place?  Were there drains there?

Jackercise, did you ever get an answer?? I am having a problem with water in my driver's floorboard and started looking online. Do you have a sunroof? If so, those might be the drainage holes from the drain lines for the sunroof. Hope you already figured this all out and have fixed your problem.!

Sounds like heater core has a hole in it. That's the only time I ever had water on my floor boards. Because my heater core had a small hole and it dripped down onto my floorboard.

If there are small holes in the floorboard, they are most likely for draining out the ELPO or first layer of rust and metal coating (primer) that the vehicle gets before it is painted. The GM vehicles that I am familiar with, ride through on a track and are submerged in large tanks to fully coat the vehicle and then they need to drain off the excess before the first bake oven. If that is really what the holes are, then plugs should be installed to seal the floorboard. A "foil backed butyl patch", would be "like a Band Aid" and would be easier than welding. A patch should be available from an Auto Parts store and could be put on from inside or underneath. Sometimes they are sold as Sound Deadening material.
