Can anyone help me find my Dad's 1964 1/2 Mustang?

Asked by YimYamSam Mar 21, 2023 at 02:28 PM about the 1964 Ford Mustang Coupe RWD

Question type: General

Hey everyone, I need some help, My dad was the original owner of a 1964.5
mustang and was forced to sell it in 1968, he doesn't know the VIN but I
believe I have figured out everything the data tag would have shown minus
the last 6 digits of the VIN does anyone know where I can view a list of VIN
numbers that I can look at based on the DSO. My dad is 80 years old and I
would really love to find and buy this car back?

Initial numbers & letters in the VIN apply to the basic car. The last numbers are the vehicles specific number. You can try the VINcheck website, but without those last numbers, you're going to be looking at all the VINs for that model year. Not to discourage you, but I've been doing this since the "60s, and I've never found it to work; possibly because most of those cars no longer exist.

You may find it easier to locate a similar car rather than the exact one your Dad owned. Look for ones that have the same options as the original then match the paint to the original color that came on the car..

Websites like Carfax, vincheck, etc. will only work with 1981 and newer model vehicles because that's when VINs became standardized with 17 characters. Unfortunately since the vehicle was sold in 1968, 55 years ago, it was probably scrapped long ago. But if you really want to try to find the vehicle you're going to have to do a lot of old fashioned footwork. You will not get any help from the DMV because of privacy laws. You should begin at the beginning. Ask your Dad who he sold the car to. If that person is still alive, try to contact them. If you're successful, ask them what they did with the vehicle. Did they sell it, trade it in, etc.? If it was traded in and not sold privately the search is over. You'll never find it. Typically Dealers keep records for maybe ten or so years, especially from the days when everything was done on paper. So I think the best option is like traver91 said, get a similar vehicle for your Dad. I'm sure he'll love it just as much, if not more, because it came from you! Good luck with your search and I hope that helps! Jim
