I have a 2006 mercury mountaineer and while

turns.

Probably OK. The "shaft" needs to move in and out. It is not sensitive to rotation.

Did the old switch "rotate" too? Can it be put in "upside down"? Does the switch prevent starting in all gears as it is supposed to?
