91 k1500 starter problems

Asked by Jul 07, 2012 at 12:55 AM about the 1991 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 91 k1500 occasionally will not start because the starter sounds like it's stuck or grinding, engine won't turn when
it does it. But only happens randomly like once or twice a month and will do it about 5 times before it stops doing it
and turns on. Should I just replace the starter or is it something else?

Grinding isn't good, that tells me the starter is starting to wear. Is it clicking? Clicking is that it needs an adjustment with the shim. But it might be something else that isn't apparent like you said. So do you spend the time and money to replace it only to find it isn't? Your call, or take it a mechanic.

No defiantly not clicking, it sounds more like if you urn the key when the carbid already on.
