exhaust manifold bolt has broken off, engine making loud tapping noise

Asked by Zak Jan 23, 2021 at 03:06 AM about the 1994 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my suburban had an idler pully put on wrong by a family member, which put a
strain on the engine and cause a loud tapping noise, I also found out that it had
also caused one of the bolts on the passenger side of the car from the exhaust
manifold to break off. can someone please tell me what the source of the
tapping is, and how to fix it

1 Answer

Check YouTube. They make brackets that can be bolted on to help clamp exhaust manifold tight to head. The brackets bolt to existing holes that are currently unused on the engine block. I have not used this solution but may work. Also a sound like tapping is sometimes reported when the exhaust manifold bolt(s) break.
