my 01 saturn sl2 wont come out of first gear and somtimes i dont have reveres

I'm assuming that it's a manual transmission car when's the last time you had service to the transmission changing the gear oil or the automatic transmission fluid And the filter I'd recommend changing those if you haven't done that lately and It would give a chance to have the pan opened up and see if there's any shavings in it to see if there's any damage to the transmission and when they change the fluid use Mobil 1 I also recommend you do a complete fluid transfer where you take the transmission coolant lines and take a return bucket and an inlet bucket and suck brand new fluid all the way through the system when the engines running and then shoot out the old fluid that's what I recommend good luck let me know what you're going to do
