when should the timing belt be replaced on a 2000 Saturn Sedan ?
I am driving a friends car. She didn't have the money to do maintenance. I know the car needs serviced. There is
over a 140,000 miles on the car. when should i have the timing belt check and or replaced? I'm not sure which 4
door sedan it is.
I believe if the vehicle has the V6 motor, the timing belt should be replaced every 100k miles or so, while the 4-cylinder motor uses a timing chain instead. You can pretty much bet that if it's made it to 140k miles, that the timing belt (if so equipped) has already been changed at some point in the past. Is the Check Engine Light on? If so, most shops will read the code for you at a *very* reasonable price, and if you post the code(s) that they find, I can help you figure out what the underlying issue(s) are.
last time i looked at Saturns, they had timing chains, and did not use timing belts. chains are superior to belts for longevity. timing belts usually last about 100,000 kilometers.
If its 4 cylinder its timing chain. If it v6 it is a timing belt. The only ones that come with a v6 is a LS2 ( and LW2 ) timing belt should be check every 60,000 miles and change at 100,000 miles. If its a timing chan drive it tell the chain start to make a slaping noise. I had sl2 with 185,000 miles on the motor when the timing chain started making a slaping noise. O don't buy O'riley timing chain kit. I put two in it before I had to go to autozone to get one that works right.
