Loud clank, truck wont move now..

Asked by 97tahoe361 Dec 01, 2017 at 02:17 PM about the 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 2-Door RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Left work and about a mile down the road, at
about 35-40mph I heard a loud bang, some
clanking, then lot of resistance from the rear
tires and occasionally tire squeal.. Pulled
over, U-Joint is tight and in fair condition..
Truck won't move in any gear forward or
reverse. Cannot push it in neutral. Hooked
up a tow rope and heard clanking for a
second till it started rolling. How can I
trouble shoot if it's the transmission or the
rear end? 97 Tahoe/4L60e

jack up the rear end (wheels off the ground) block front wheels, put in neutral, try moving rear wheels by hand....if they dont move, disconnect driveshaft and see if wheels move.....if not it's the rear end..

Yea I've gotten to it now and with the drive shaft off, I can turn the rear diff freely and the wheels rotate smoothly both directions

I'm assuming you hear no noise at all in the rear end....no noise from the rear brakes???Then check the trasnsfer case(4wd) if equipped, and transmission the same way with the driveshaft still disconnected..
