hard shifting

Accelerate to 30 -40 mph. back off the accelerator. then when i put my foot
down on the accelerator nothing happens, as if I hit a dead spot in the
accelerator petal travel. Then it hard shifts into gear.  It dosent  seem to happen
up hill
